One Another Devotion - Day 14

Devotional: Unity

By Judy Duncan

Ephesians 4:1-3 (NIV)

As a prisoner for the Lord, then, I urge you to live a life worthy of the calling you have received. 2 Be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in love. 3 Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace.

The footnote in my Bible says that “Unity is the responsibility of each believer and is to be pursued earnestly.” These first three verses in Ephesians chapter four state that we should walk “worthy.”

Another footnote says, “Worthy means of sufficient weight, a quality issuing from acknowledging what Christ has poured into us, rather than whatever worth is felt or unfelt in oneself.”

What a wonderful way to be brought into Unity. Paul reminds us of what our “high calling” is. Then entreats us to follow the example set. Walking humbly, with gentleness, patience, loving one another and following Christ’s example to keep the “unity of the Spirit in a bond of peace.”

We need to remember our example may speak louder than our words in bringing others to Christ. Let the love and peace of Christ flow out of each of us to others.

If you had more than one child, you may have experienced the same visual that I did. My oldest daughter was three years old when she looked out and saw cows and immediately turned to her sister who was 16 months younger and lovingly pointed out the cows and other sights as we traveled to Grandma & Granddad’s house. I recognized that she had learned this as well as many other habits and behaviors from us. I was excited to see her teaching by example at such a young age.

Watching children model good behavior is always a delight. Just as is, seeing those new Christians following the example of Christ, Pastors, and Leaders promoting love, peace, and unity.

This week think of people in your life who have been modeling the love of Christ to you. In what area mentioned in the scriptures above did that person or persons help you to reach toward the High Calling of Christ?

Lift this person up in prayers of Thankfulness.

Perhaps send a card or give the person a call to encourage and bless that person for being an example to follow.
